  • Jesus is more!

Rev. Taylor Anderson, First United Methodist Church of Alva|Nov 8, 2024

Scripture references: Mark 5: 25-34 I saw a video the other day in which a man spoke about the many different ways people encounter Jesus for the first time. If you grew up in church, you were likely raised to understand Jesus as “Savior,” the One who forgives and ransoms us from sin. That understanding of Jesus as “Savior” is absolutely fundamental to our faith. So, it makes sense that this view of Jesus is the most common among “churched” people. But, what about those who aren’t raised in church? Growing up in church or having any basic und...

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Nov 8, 2024

In Exodus 19:6, God gives Moses a prophecy about the future Israel, which is the church, in which He says, “you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” I Peter 2:4-5 is the fulfillment of that prophecy which says, “As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Chris...

    NWOSU Sports|Nov 8, 2024

ALVA – Home may be where the heart is, but it's often the most difficult place to play. The Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo teams hosted the Central Plains Region teams this past weekend at the Alva Dome, and while there was some rough sledding, there were a handful of Rangers who found success. "That was our hometown rodeo, but it's also a pretty tough place to compete because of the way it's set up," said Dale Lee Forman, a junior from Highmore, South Dakota, who placed in the cha...

  • Why does everything happen to me and Dick Tracy?

    Jim Scribner|Nov 8, 2024

I had an appointment a week ago Tuesday for a heart procedure at Oklahoma City. Jeff drove me down, and we got there a little early, so I went on in. No one was at the desk, and there was an Alva couple waiting on his procedure. We visited right along; noon came and went, and nobody was at the desk. In a little while somebody showed up, but never asked me what I needed. At about ten to one I asked the lady if it was going to be a while and if so, could I clock in and sweep and clean until they...

  • A political tragedy, part 4

    Roger Hardaway|Nov 8, 2024

In 1980, Pennsylvania voters elected Budd Dwyer to the office of state treasurer. At the age of 40 with 16 years’ experience in the state legislature, Dwyer was a rising star in the state’s Republican ranks. As the first member of his party to be Pennsylvania’s treasurer in 20 years, Dwyer promised the state’s citizens that he would reform the office by modernizing its outdated operations. The previous occupants of the state treasurer’s office, Dwyer said, had created a “financial antique” th...

  • Burn barrels

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Nov 8, 2024

Remember from your childhood all those stories about that man or woman “who lives right over there?” That person you knew from experience – yours or others – to avoid at all costs. Those stories varied from a witch, to scary dude, to mean as a junk yard dog. Yeah, me too. And my kid imagination took off with wings that carried me to thoughts of murders and kidnapping. Silly child, you say? Absolutely, but you couldn’t convince me of that back then. Every neighborhood seems to have its own ‘that...

  • Breast bags

    Arden Chaffee|Nov 8, 2024

There is a picture in November’s National Geographic of a 15th century linen “skirted bra” from Austria’s Lengberg Castle. This discovery in a cluttered vault resembles the modern long-line bra and is evidence of the “breast bags” referred to by some medieval authors. It surprised clothing historians who thought bra cups were a 19th century creation. There is no definite proof of when the brassiere was first introduced, but Aphrodite of Greek history is mentioned in Homer’s Iliad as wearing a...
