  • Black?

Pastor Drake Colvin, Hopeton Wesleyan Church|Dec 1, 2023

Have you heard of the term Black Friday? We all know it is where sales start at the beginning of the Christmas season. It is the Friday after Thanksgiving. For centuries, the adjective "black" has been applied to days when calamities occurred. So, the word black is an interesting word to use for the Friday after Thanksgiving — a little history of Black Friday for those who do not know it. The first known use of the term Black Friday to refer to the day after Thanksgiving was in the “Journal of Factory Management and Maintenance" in Nov...

  • Choose your friends wisely

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Dec 1, 2023

When I was growing up, I made some bad choices and then blamed that choice on my friends by saying, “Johnny did it, too.” My parents would always come back with the line, “if Johnny jumped off a cliff, would you do that too?” They would then sit me down, and the teaching drilled into my head was that I needed to be careful when picking my friends because they could lead me down a wrong path that would end in trouble. I didn’t have to go very far to know just where they got their information. I Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be misled: “Ba...

  • Firing back

    Arden Chaffee|Dec 1, 2023

How many times have you regretted not having the perfect comeback? The Wall Street Journal says, “The best comeback puts the other person on notice and allows us to stand up for ourselves or someone else.” It is usually a good idea to say nothing, but it is hard to resist. When a statement is hurtful or offending, it is best to not fire back. It makes sense to have a go-to comeback for just such awkward situations. Lenny Reed uses a single word: “really.” It is non-confrontational and grants...

  • Ramblings of a Redneck Farmer

    Doug Little|Dec 1, 2023

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday. Time will tell, but I wonder what the future of agriculture will look like. Will agriculture continue to get more consolidated and larger? Will that trend correct itself and will farms get smaller? Well, if I was going to bet money, I would say that we will stay with the trend of the big continuing to get bigger and the smaller farms and ranches becoming more of a hobby. Homesteading continues to become a realistic goal for a lot of people who realize that for the sake of their sanity and their...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Dec 1, 2023

In the decades since Shirley Muldowney won her three championships in the National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) Top Fuel category, several other female drivers have also excelled at drag racing. Only one other, however, has risen to the top of the Top Fuel class. She is Brittany Force, a member of one of the sport’s royal families. Her father, John Force, is among the most successful and venerated drag racers in American history. John Force, competing in the NHRA’s “Funny Car” class, has been...

  • Another busy NFR awaits Proctor

    NWOSU Sports|Dec 1, 2023

PRYOR – Trying to find one word to describe Coleman Proctor is a bit perplexing. He’s a husband, a father, a cowboy, a partner, a broadcaster and a podcaster. He’s also one of the greatest team roping headers of his generation, proven through multiple qualifications to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and his six top-10 finishes in the world standings. Throw in a fence-fixer and a cattle-doctorer, it adds up to being a cowboy who not only is comfortable in about any situation, but one who thrives when others might just sulk away. In recent ye...

Following two days of practice sessions, on Tuesday the Goldbugs traveled to take on longtime rivals the Chisholm Longhorns. It was a barnburner of a game with plenty of physical contact and fouls on both sides. In the end, the Longhorns edged out the Goldbugs 64-61. The Goldbugs started off with three three-point shots from Daylon Malone, Kash Shipley and... Full story

  • More Israeli hostages freed by Hamas as truce in Gaza lasts another day

    WAFAA SHURAFA and JACK JEFFERY|Dec 1, 2023

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas began freeing Israeli hostages Thursday in exchange for the release of more Palestinian prisoners under a last-minute deal to extend their cease-fire in Gaza by another day. But any further renewal of the truce, now in its seventh day, could prove more daunting since Hamas is expected to set a higher price for many of the remaining hostages. Hamas freed two Israeli women Thursday afternoon, and in the evening six more hostages were handed over to the Red Cross in Gaza and were being brought to Israel, t...

  • Henry Kissinger's complicated legacy draws admiration and scorn from across the globe

    FOSTER KLUG and GEIR MOULSON|Dec 1, 2023

TOKYO (AP) — The death of former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger drew both admiration and scorn Thursday from political leaders around the world, highlighting the complicated legacy of Kissinger's views about what it meant to serve America's interests during the Cold War — and how the country should exert its influence. Kissinger, who died Wednesday at 100, was one of America's most powerful diplomats. During his years serving under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, he shaped the country's foreign policy in ways that led to bre...

  • Some OPEC+ members will cut the oil that they send to the world to try to boost prices

    ELLEN KNICKMEYER and COURTNEY BONNELL|Dec 1, 2023

LONDON (AP) — The OPEC oil cartel led by Saudi Arabia and allied producers including Russia made another big swipe at propping up lagging crude prices Thursday, expanding some output cuts into next year and bringing up-and-coming oil supplier Brazil into the fold. Lower oil prices have been a good thing for U.S. drivers, who have been able to fill their gas tanks for less money in recent months. But it's bad news for OPEC+ countries whose oil income bolsters their economies and who have faced setbacks in pushing prices higher despite initial f...

  • The RNC's rules for the 2024 convention don't address what would happen if Donald Trump is convicted

    MICHELLE L. PRICE|Dec 1, 2023

NEW YORK (AP) — The Republican National Committee's rules for next year's nominating contest and convention were released this week without addressing a question the GOP could well face next summer: Can the party's delegates vote for a different candidate if the presumptive nominee is convicted of a felony? Former President Donald Trump is under four criminal indictments that will proceed through the GOP primary season, an overlap of legal and political calendars with no precedent in American politics. Fifteen states and American Samoa hold t...
