Waukomis, Okla. – The Alva Ladybugs move on to 2-0 as the Ladybugs beat the Timberlake Lady Tigers 65-18 in the first round of the Mustang Stampede. The Ladybugs jumped out to a 25-5 lead in the first quarter. Many of the Ladybugs' points came from the full court pressure that led to quite a few fast-break points. Ladybug Chloe Durkee led the way in the first quarter with eight points, including two shots from the three-point line. Payton Jones added seven points in the quarter as well. The L...

Have you received a robo-call with the caller ID of someone you know? Doug Shadel in AARP Magazine explains how easy it is to spoof someone’s phone number. It was irritating enough to receive the telemarketer calls, which were limited to land lines listed in the phone book. They have expanded into the cell phone market as fewer phone numbers are published. As a business, we are obligated to take calls for fear of missing an opportunity, and when names I recognize appear, I have learned that i...
Last week, I recounted how once upon a time I was able to rescue a turtle from being run over on Oklahoma Boulevard. A lack of traffic allowed me to remove the poor reptile from the roadway and deposit him safely onto a nearby grassy area. Well, a few weeks later, at the very same spot, I repeated that small good deed. This time, however, there was a semi-truck chugging up the hill heading west. I was able to get this second turtle to safety without putting myself in any danger. The truck...

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a 6 p.m. start and is free for any and all who would like to attend. Although numbers are not yet confirmed as to how many performers will be playing tubas on stage, Seth Cudd, instructor of music and director of bands at Northwestern, said that he already anticipates at least 20 tuba players, including...
In “Food bank in high gear for holidays,” published in last Sunday’s paper, the story incorrectly stated that food bank clients do not have to fill in any paperwork. We regret the error. In actuality, food bank clients do have to provide a small amount of personal information, but food bank director Jennifer Marston says that’s only so that she can help point clients to other resources that might help meet their particular needs....

Doesn’t this time of year just make you feel like a kid again? Between the music, the lights, people filling the stores to buy presents, and all the holiday dinners, this always feels like the most familiar time of year to me. It’s also the most imaginative time of year, and not just for children. Think about all the ways we open our minds and use our imaginations during the holidays. I mean, some of us go through quite a bit of effort dealing with that pesky Elf on the Shelf every day, don...
I’m fairly certain I was in my late teens before someone pointed out to me that as God was creating man (Genesis 1, Day 6) He referred to Himself in the plural. Our English texts get the gist of the passage when they translate the phrase, “Let us make man in our image (Gen. 1:26).” It did not sink in until much later that, earlier in the chapter, Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning, God created ... “) actually uses a plural form of the generic Canaanite word for deity. In other words, the first phr...
The importance of the Santa Fe Trail both for travel and commercial purposes in the growth of the United States, along with the dangers and trials it presented travelers, was the focus for the day as the Woodward Chapter NSDAR along with the Oklahoma State Society NSDAR commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail by rededicating a Santa Fe Trail Marker placed by the High Plains Chapter in 1994. The marker is located in the far western portion of the Oklahoma Panhandle west of Boise...

Teenagers, fresh out of high school, could be hired to guard and oversee hardened criminals in Oklahoma’s chronically overcrowded and understaffed prisons. In a little-noticed action, the Oklahoma Board of Corrections passed a set of legislative requests earlier this month that include allowing prisons to hire corrections officials as young as 18. Currently the minimum age is 20. The Department of Correction has struggled for years to attract and retain workers for the job, which now starts with a salary of just under $33,000 a year. Despite a...

LSU will have plenty of fans on the campuses of Oklahoma, Baylor and perhaps Utah this week. If No. 4 Georgia (No. 4 CFP) upsets the top-ranked Tigers (No. 2 CFP) in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday in Atlanta, both are expected to make the four-team College Football Playoff field. That likely would knock out the Big 12 champion and Pac-12 champion, unless something unexpected occurs, such as No. 3 Clemson (No. 3 CFP) losing to No. 22 Virginia (a 28-point underdog) in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. But...
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld the first-degree murder convictions and life in prison sentences of two men in separate cases from 2016. The court rejected appeals by 36-year-old Keenan Holcomb, who was convicted in the June 2016 strangulation death of Tamyra Elston in Norman, and by 34-year-old Jeremy Irvin for the July 2016 fatal shooting of long-time friend and former brother-in-law Robert Godwin. The defense attorney for the two men did not immediately return a phone call for comment. Holcomb claimed i...
