The Great Plains Correctional Facility was built in 1989 with the use of public bonds issued by the Hinton Economic Development Authority. Primarily an agriculture- and oil-based town, the addition of the prison on Sugar Creek Road meant over 300 new jobs and tens of millions of dollars in revenue for the town over the past 32 years.
