The CROP Hunger Walk is more than just a yearly gathering. It's a movement that's 55 years strong, made up of compassionate people in more than 500 communities across the U.S. The funds raised together help people...

For the past few weeks, we have been bombarded by political commercials, polls, promises, debates, mudslinging and fighting. We will all have our fill of politics by election day next Tuesday. I have been studying the word politics to help me better understand this whole process and have found this interesting definition. The word politics comes from two words, “poly” and “tics.” “Poly” means many and “tics” means blood-sucking creatures …. Well, it may not be the right definition, but we might all believe this is true by election day. Ser...
The definition of hope is the desire with an expectation of obtainment or fulfillment. All of us have hoped for one thing or another with an expectation of obtaining that one thing or another. We have hoped for a better job, a better life, to make a best friend, to make more money, to have better neighbors, and to win the lottery (I’m still hoping!). Hope gives us energy and motivation to keep moving forward in this life to obtain those things we cherish. In the world of physics, Newton’s third law of motion teaches us that “for every actio...

Tony Quiroga in Car and Driver Magazine said, “I'm fascinated with people who care enough and know how to undo obsolescence.” We live in a society where on-board diagnostics tell the technician which part to pull out and replace. Remove and replace works well when shiny and new but what happens when a product has been out of production for years? There is a good feeling when you know people that can “keep the flame burning” and get something going again. Is obsolescence planned? Henry Ford bu...
Ever listened to two people or two groups argue? Both opponents believe there is only one real truth: MINE! Doesn’t matter how loudly the other side yells. Doesn’t make a difference how many facts the other side lays out and cites triumphantly. These volunteer advocates for living with sky high blood pressure scoff at anything that doesn’t back up what they know to be ‘the absolute Truth, so help me God.’ You’ve seen it happen, or probably been part of it at some point. Sure you have, don’t...
As a preface to today’s article, I think it’s important to note that I generally try to stay away from politics in my writing, so I don’t broach this topic lightly. I also try to have an optimistic, feel-good aspect to my articles, but for some of you, today’s article may seem anything but light-hearted or optimistic. It is my sincere hope that some aspect of today’s article hits home and that it has the potential to change a few readers' minds and touch some hearts. Over the past weekend, I exp...
Ramblings of a Redneck Farmer This past Thursday was the third anniversary of Dad’s departure to Heaven. I’ve written something about him every year on or around his departure day, not really understanding why, but most of the time doing it because I thought I should. This year I believe I know why. I always try to be transparent in my writings, because if I am just blowing smoke up your pant leg, why am I writing? If I do that, what I write doesn’t do anyone any good, not me or anyone that reads what I wrote, so I don't plan on starting to do...
As we have seen, Robert E. Casey won election to the office of state treasurer of Pennsylvania in 1976. Almost everyone agrees that his rise in state politics was a fluke. Presumably, at least, many (and perhaps most) voters mistook Casey for state auditor (and future governor) Robert P. Casey. So, when it was time for Robert E. to run for a second term in 1980, Pennsylvania Republicans were ready. First, they chose a rising young star in the party to be their nominee. The GOP’s candidate was B...
In reality it is still pretty great, but it needs a little polishing around the edges. This was done in 1969 by Red Skelton as a skit. I want everyone who votes and is radical in their thinking to read this or better yet find the skit on the internet and listen to it carefully, to its words and meanings. Our country is at war within itself because of all the lies, propaganda and pot-stirring that is called a presidential election. Whatever you believe and whoever you vote for, when it is over,...

It's been three years since the Alva Planning Commission met, and Monday's meeting got off to a slow start. Three commission members were present at the 6 p.m. start time, but one more was needed for a quorum of the six members. Present were Chairman Christie Kornele and members Charles Murrow and Matt Adair. After some phone messages, it was learned that Tyler Crawford thought the meeting was a half hour later. He arrived at 6:25 p.m. with apologies, and the meeting began. Before getting to...

Early voting begins Wednesday, Oct. 30, for voters in Woods County. Voters who will not be able to make it to the polls on Election Day, have the option of voting early at their County Election Board. Woods County Election Board Secretary Holly Blevins said early voting is open to all voters. “You do not need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board or State Election Board – from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a gre...
