Most of the women who have served as the first lady of the United States have been intelligent and accomplished. In the early years of our country’s existence, however, few of them had the opportunity to go to college or have careers of their own.
That situation has changed rather dramatically in recent years. All of the first ladies since 1961 attended college and all but two of them graduated with bachelor’s degrees. Moreover, some of them put their degrees to use, especially before they married.
