Electric Gold behind the scenes
September 9, 2016
Recently, Damon Brown came to Alva High School to teach choreography to Electric Gold (EG). This is the 26th time he has come to Alva to teach choreography. Brown lives in Carmel, Indiana, and he choreographs for several different show choirs around the country, including show choirs in Burbank, California; Florida; and Indianapolis, Indiana. Brown was here Aug. 24-27. He taught several different songs, including "Sing" by the Pentatonix, "Better When I'm Dancing" by Meghan Trainor, "Hold Back the River" by James Bay, and "Photograph" by Ed Sheeran. His favorite song that he taught was "Sing" by the Pentatonix.
Wednesday night EG got started with "Sing." It is a high-intensity, fast-paced, fun song. Then on Thursday, EG finished "Sing" and learned all of "Better When I'm Dancing," which is more relaxed, but still very energized and upbeat. Saturday morning, they worked hard from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., finishing all of the choreography.
In 2013 Brown founded Show Choir Kindness. Show Choir Kindness is an organization that was founded so students can have a place to share their positive experiences and accomplishments with others. Brown said he wanted to create Show Choir Kindness because "if you have a group of 100 students, and 92 are great kids and 8 are bad, I want to show off those 92 great kids." Show Choir Kindness has over 1,800 members from 11 countries on the group's Facebook page.
This year the members of EG are focusing on continuing to try and better themselves and the performances they give. On Saturday when they were just about finished with the choreography camp, Brown sat the members of EG down and talked about what they want EG to be.
"This group can be a new kind of excellent, a different wonderful. It's all up to you," said Brown.
EG will begin this journey with new vocal director Bryce Lewis.
