Ladybugs fall in final; avenge loss on Tuesday

September 9, 2016

On Aug. 25-27 the Alva Ladybugs softball team traveled to Tonkawa to play in their second tournament of the year. The Ladybugs brought home second with a tough loss to Blackwell on Saturday. They were 3-1 in the tournament.

During Thursday's game against Pioneer, Alva won with a score of 2-1. Hallie Durkee pitched during this tough game but managed to get the win. She struck out 11 girls and only gave up three hits. Camryn Wren got three balls hit to her and threw them all to first base to get all three outs for the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, Hannah O’Neil got on base with two outs and stole second all while Payton Jones was batting. Alva was tied 1-1 and Jones hit a fly ball to shortstop and the shortstop dropped it. Jones was safe at first and as Pioneer was busy watching Jones, O'Neil ran home and scored for Alva to win.

On Friday, Alva played Tonkawa and Woodland. Alva beat Tonkawa with a score of 4-0. Wren pitched this game and tallied seven strikeouts and only let five girls get on base for Tonkawa.

“The girls need to forget about when we played them earlier in the week and stay focused on winning this game,” says assistant Coach Shelby Anderson when asked how to keep focused coming off of a run rule win against Woodland earlier that week. The Ladybugs did exactly what Coach Anderson said they needed to and came away with a 12-1 run rule win.

On Saturday the Ladybugs fell short 3-0 to Blackwell during the championship game. Durkee started on the mound and struck out two girls but gave up three runs. Durkee says “pitching two games in the tournament and one earlier in the week, my arm was getting really sore and was really hurting during this final game.” Coach Margo Hamilton then decided to put Wren on the mound to finish the game. Wren didn’t give up any runs but Alva still fell short.

Alva continued their season on Tuesday the 30th against Blackwell at 5:00 at Alva. The Ladybugs reclaimed their loss the previous Saturday with a win. Wren pitched and gave the Ladybugs another win with a score of 4-1.
