Rail park continues working toward BNSF certification

October 16, 2016

At their Tuesday evening meeting, members of the Avard Regional Rail Park Authority accepted individual tasks toward official certification with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Official BNSF Rail Park designation would enhance the park’s ability to attract new customers.

Economic Development Director Sonja Williams said some of the additional requirements required by BNSF are additional research on endangered species in the area, any archaeological designations, and no designations as an official wetland area.

Much of the meeting involved an executive session discussing the contract with Martin-Marietta, the rock company at the park.

“We still don’t have the revised contract for approval,” Williams said.

No action took place on items discussed in the executive session nor on an item regarding rail maintenance.

All five board members were present: Bob Firth, Joe Royster, Stan Bixler, Ed Sutter and Todd Holder. Guests included Woods County District II Commissioner Randy McMurphy and Woods County Clerk Shelley Reed.
