Tigers fall to Arkansas-Monticello, 34-26

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Ouachita Tigers football team dropped to 4-4 on the season after falling to the University of Arkansas at Monticello by a final of 34-26. Ouachita's Shun'cee Thomasrushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns, whileCole Antley went 4-4 on field goal attempts, including a long of 37 yards. Elijah Jones led the Ouachita defense with nine tackles. It was the Tigers first loss to Arkansas-Monticello since 2010.

Ouachita opened the game with an 11 play, 82-yard drive. Shun'cee Thomas scored on an 8-yard carry to give Ouachita the early 7-0 lead with 9:24 left in the first quarter. The Weevils answered with a touchdown drive of their own, scoring on a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cole Sears. Tied 7-7, Cole Antley connected on a 21-yard field goal to finish the scoring in the first quarter with the Tigers leading 10-7.

UAM took a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter on the second touchdown pass from Sears. The Tigers cut that to one on the leg of Antley, who drilled a 37-yard field goal on the Tigers' ensuing drive. On their next possession, the Weevils drove down inside the Ouachita five yard line, but an unsportsmanlike penalty and a sack by Keontae Chavies moved UAM back to the Ouachita 24. A 41-yard field goal extended the UAM lead to 17-13.

The Tigers kept the Weevils close despite turning the ball over on their next two possessions. The defense held UAM to only a field of the turnovers. Trailing 20-13 with 54 seconds left in the first half, the Tigers drove down to the UAM 11 with four seconds left in the clock. Antley connected on his third field goal of the half. The 28-yard kick left the Tigers trailing by four at the half, 20-16.

Arkansas-Monticello extended the lead on their opening second-half drive. Sears threw his third touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Jalen Tolliver for the 26-yard score. Ouachita answered with it's biggest play of the day. Thomas broke free on the first play of the drive, covering 70 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game. The Tigers trailed 27-23 with nine minutes left in the third quarter of play. The Weevils gained the momentum right back when they returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards, extending their lead to 34-23. Ouachita on a 34-yard field goa; by Antley, his fourth of the game, and entered the fourth quarter trailing 34-26.

Despite holding the Weevils offense to 55 yards in the fourth quarter, the Tigers were unable to cut into the lead. It was the most balanced quarter for the Ouachita offense, gaining 133 yards, 67 on the ground and 66 via the air. The quarter would end with neither team scoring and Ouachita would fall by a final of 34-26.

The Tigers return home to face Southern Nazarene University on Thursday night, Oct. 27. THe kickoff at Cliff Harris Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
