In 1919 the 18th Amendment was passed, prohibiting the manufacture, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages. This law was called Prohibition. The joke was, “Prohibition replaced good beer with bad gin.”

There were other repercussions, including whiskey stills, bootleggers and organized crime. America was “dry” until 1933 when the 21st Amendment was passed, allowing states to choose for themselves.
