Rangers struggle from the tipoff against No. 25 Golden Suns

November 20, 2016

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – The Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-3, 0-1 Great American Conference) women’s basketball team continued their road trip in Arkansas to face off with the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (1-1, 0-1 GAC), both searching for their first conference win of the season.

The Golden Suns were first on the board following the tip-off Saturday afternoon as Kelsey McClure drained a three-pointer to get the lead. Northwestern’s Jonae Isaac answered right back with a mid-range jumper to cut the lead to one point, 2-3.

That was the Rangers only point in the first quarter as they struggled to keep up with the Golden Suns who went on a 19-point rampage to put the score at 2-22 going into the second quarter.

Northwestern finally ended their nine-minute drought as McKenzie Billy attacked the basket for a layup to put the score at 4-22.

That second quarter was a better showing for the Rangers only being outscored by the Golden Suns by six points, but that opening period hurt Northwestern for the rest of the game as they went into halftime trailing Arkansas Tech 18-44.

The Rangers continued to battle, but the damage was done in that first half, as the Golden Suns ended the game with their biggest lead of the day with the final score at 35-81.

Stats

Jaylan Robinson was the only Ranger to make it into double digits with 10 points to go with her one rebound and one assist. Other contributors for Northwestern were, Renee Contreras (5 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal), Kalea King (3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), Kori Barrios (3 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal), Destinee Robinson (3 points, 1 rebound), Shilah Young (3 points, 3 rebounds), McKenzie Billy (2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal) and Jakeria Otey (1 point, 1 rebound, 1 steal).

The Rangers struggled from the field only hitting 10-of-45 for a shooting percentage of 22.2 against a Arkansas Tech team that hit 31-of -65 for 47.7 shooting percentage. Northwestern also gave up 18 offensive rebounds for the game, which the Golden Suns capitalized with 14 total second-chance points.

Northwestern (0-4, 0-2 GAC) will have another non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 22, against NAIA division opponent, Mid-America Christian University (6-1, 0-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) for a tipoff at 6 p.m.
