Freedom Public School Board enters into legal contract

The Freedom School Board met Monday night for their regular board meeting.

The board approved the consent agenda at the beginning of the meeting, consisting of the minutes of Oct. 17 (a regular meeting) and Oct. 24 (a special meeting); activity fund expenditures, and the approval and warrant signing of the general fund, building fund, and child nutrition fund. The school's current finances are: general fund, $621,996.32; building fund, $163,323.55; child nutrition fund, $3,800 and sinking fund, $2,000. The grand total is $791,148.50.

In the superintendent's report, Frieda Burgess spoke of the sports season. “We're playing basketball. A lot of basketball!” she said, after giving the school's financial report, listed above.

The principal's report indicated that on Nov. 28 at 9 a.m. a player from the Oklahoma City Thunder will visit the school gym to talk to the students about leadership, responsibility and overcoming his battle with leukemia, which he overcame with the help of the Leukemia Foundation. Buffalo and Cherokee students were invited to join the event.

The fourth item on the agenda was the topic of new computers. The board approved the purchase of four new computers for the offices at the price of $1,309.98 each, for a total of $5,239.92.

Next, Margaret Woodard-Smith was approved by the board as a science adjunct teacher, and for an extra duty contract.

After some discussion, the board voted yes to entering into a contract with Rosenstein, Fist, & Ringold, a law firm, for the 2016-2017 school year. The contract was on an “as needed” basis, and the school would only be charged if the lawyers' services were used.

Next, the calendar dates for the 2017 board meetings were approved. The dates are as follows: Jan. 16, Jan. 21, March 27, April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20, and Dec. 18.

The board then discussed and voted yes to applying for a loan from Alfalfa Electric Cooperative for new heating and air conditioning systems.

Next, an executive session was entered into to discuss the employment, hiring, appointment, promotion, demotion, disciplining or resignation of individual salaried officer(s) or employees(s).

The board, upon returning to open session, announced that no votes were taken during the executive session, and the meeting adjourned.
