Helena man charged with enabling child neglect

November 23, 2016

Alfalfa County has filed a felony charge against a young man from Helena. Remy Alexander Trammell, 21, of Helena has been charged with enabling child neglect, a felony. This crime is punishable by imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections not exceeding life imprisonment or by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or by a fine of not less than $500 nor more than $5,000 or both such fine and imprisonment.

According to court records, the charge stems from suspected abuse inflicted on Trammell’s infant female daughter, one of a set of twins. It’s not known if charges were filed against the infant’s mother because she is listed as a juvenile, and therefore those records are not public.

Records show that on Oct. 27, 2016, Assistant District Attorney Westline Ritter called OSBI Special Agent Chris Ray to request an OSBI investigation of allegations of child abuse by Trammel and the infant’s mother.

The parents and infants had been visiting a relative in Roland, Oklahoma, when the infant was taken to Sparks Hospital in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. The hospital contacted Roland Police Officer Greg Cox on Oct. 2 about possible child abuse. Medical personnel at the hospital reported the child had a broken right femur.

While Officer Cox was interviewing the parents, they were told the infant was being medi-flighted to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) in Little Rock, Arkansas. The parents left to go to ACH. Sparks Hospital personnel made an official child abuse report request to the Child Abuse Hotline to the infant’s injuries.

While the child was at ACH medical personnel found other fractures. The right femur (leg) was classified as a spiral fracture. The infant was also found to have a fractured clavicle (collarbone) and a right forearm fracture.

On Oct. 18, a physician at Integris Bass of Enid found the infant had additional fractures of four ribs.

On Nov. 15, District Attorney’s Investigator Steve Tanio conducted a post-Miranda, videotaped interview of Trammel who said he had witnessed multiple occasions of the infant’s mother being physically abusive with the infant. In a statement, he wrote “… I realized too late that she had been rough with the girls on occasion … I feel very sorry that I didn’t stop it.”
