An innovative use of fabric transforms lowly hay bales into a gingerbread cottage at Alva Sewing Center and Fabrics & More on the south side of Alva's square.

The hay bales, pumpkins and scarecrows of Fall Fest are giving way to colorful Christmas décor on Alva's downtown square. Though there were some preliminary events following Thanksgiving, the real deal kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 3, with "Christmas Comes to Alva" sponsored by the Alva Area Chamber of Commerce and local merchants.

It all begins at the Alva Fire Department for Breakfast with Santa from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Retail open house events begin at 10 a.m. Those looking for the homemade touch can check out the craft show at the merchants building at the Woods County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Parents can drop the kids off at the Rialto Theatre for a free movie at 3 p.m. while they enjoy a chance to do some secret shopping. (Adults are welcome at the theatre, too.)

Local businesses are already giving out tickets for the "Candy Cane Cash" drawings. Be on the west end of the square by the stage at 4:30 p.m. for the drawing. Winners will receive Chamber Bucks that can be used in most Alva stores.

Put on your ugliest holiday sweater for the Ugly Sweater Competition following the drawing at 4:45 p.m.

Colorful lighted wreaths adorn light poles as downtown Alva prepares for the holiday season. Lighted decorations are in place on the square for the Grand Tree Lighting Dec. 3.

At 5 p.m. there will be a parade around the downtown square heralding the arrival of the Christmas season to Alva. The Grand Tree Lighting will follow. Cookies, hot cider and cocoa will be served. Alva's premier song leader Fred Neuman will lead the crowd in caroling.

The fun continues on Sunday afternoon with the annual Christmas vocal concert at Alva High School starting at 2 p.m. The concert is free. The annual Tour of Homes will follow the concert from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tickets for the tour will be available for purchase at the concert with money to benefit the school's vocal program.

Remember that shopping in Alva not only helps local businesses keep their doors open, but it also benefits the city, county and hospital with support from sales tax.
