Kiowa Boy Scouts "Operation Christmas" is huge success

This is a small view of the large crowd that gathered to watch Kiowa's Boy Scouts launch their "Operation Christmas" project to honor area veterans. Troop mom Brandy Johnson said the community's support surpassed their expectations.

The scene was reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting – small town America, with folks gathered around patriotic Christmas trees singing carols – people sipping hot cocoa and waiting for a lighted Christmas parade.

It was a beautiful, chilly evening Sunday, where a sizable crowd gathered on the corner at Seventh and Main Street in Kiowa, Kansas, that was transformed into the most beautiful holiday tribute to veterans.

Kiowa's Boy Scout Troop 281 started "Operation Christmas" and filled the vacant lot with Christmas trees that were decorated in the colors of each branch of the military.
