January 5, 2017

Henderson State will attempt to win its fifth straight game as the Reddies play host to Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday in Great American Conference play with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.

The Reddies enter the new year with an 8-2 record overall and 3-1 mark in GAC play. Henderson has not won five consecutive games since the beginning of the 2012-13 season when Henderson rattled off six straight victories.

Kaylon Tappin leads the Reddies offensively scoring 16.6 points per game. The junior from Little Rock has averaged 21.0 points the last four games.

Chris Hawkins follows averaging 14.5 points while leading the team in rebounds at 7.0 boards per game. Hankins lead the GAC in field goal percentage converting on 69 percent from the field.

Also scoring in double-figures is Toney Foster who averages 10.3 points per contest. The senior from West Monroe, La. also averages 2.2 assists per game.

Southwestern Oklahoma is 4-6 on the season and 1-3 in GAC play entering Thursday's game. The Bulldogs began the year 0-6 before winning four straight.

In GAC contests, SWOSU averages just 68.8 points per game with the Bulldogs giving up 79.0 points. The Bulldogs' lone GAC win was an 80-76 win over Southern Arkansas on Dec. 3.

The junior from Phenix City, Ala. has scored in double-figures in eight of 10 games this year including 22 points in SWOSU's last game against Randall. Pugh was a two-time all-conference selection from Southern Union State CC before transferring to SWOSU.

Markeise Champion averages 12.3 points while leading the team in 3-point field goals with 26. The senior from Menlo Park, Calif. was a GAC Honorable Mention selection last season. He scored a season-high 21 points against Arkansas-Monticello and Randall.

One player to watch coming off the bench is Nick Shoemaker who averages 5.9 points per game but is a solid perimeter shooter. Shoemaker has knocked down 18-of-41 3-point field goals for 44 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

Southwestern Oklahoma leads the all-time series with Henderson State having a 6-5 advantage. The two teams first met during the 2011-12 season with the Reddies winning that first meeting 86-80.

The Reddies won both games of the series last week ending a four-game losing skid to the Bulldogs.
