Woods County 4-H'er selected as Healthy Living Youth Ambassador
February 12, 2017
A group of Oklahoma 4-H'ers will soon be making the trek to Washington, D.C., to represent the state and the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development Program as Healthy Living Youth Ambassadors as they take part in the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit.
Woods County 4-H'er Hannah Kornele is one of six club members from Oklahoma selected to take part in this endeavor geared toward accomplishing the goals and outcomes of the 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate. The National 4-H Healthy Living Summit will take place Feb. 17-20.
Cathy Allen, 4-H curriculum coordinator at the State 4-H Office on the Oklahoma State University campus, will accompany the group to Washington, D.C., and said she is excited about the opportunities these club members will have in the nation's capital.
"The 4-H Youth Development Program has focused on health since its inception in 1902, and this new health-related program is a great way to get more information to our members," Allen said. "These club members have been given a great opportunity to not only impact the health and well-being of their own lives, but that of every 4-H'er across the state. And as an added bonus, they're also developing public speaking skills and enhancing their professional development opportunities through their involvement as a Healthy Living Youth Ambassador."
While at the summit, all of the new youth ambassadors will receive training on all aspects of healthy living, including social, emotional and physical health. They will bring this valuable information back to Oklahoma and plan a statewide Oklahoma Healthy Living Summit to take place later this spring.
4-H has long been a national leader in health-related education and the 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate encourages youth and families through access and opportunities to achieve not only optimal physical health, but also social health and emotional well-being.
Kornele is a member of the Alva 4-H Club believes in keeping up with a healthy lifestyle.
"I take part in a several amazing organizations such as Electric Gold Show Choir, varsity golf, Key Club, 4-H and Student Council and I've come to realize a healthy lifestyle enables me to be at my best for these organizations," Kornele said. "Also, last year I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Thanks to my work in 4-H, I've been taught how to read food labels and calculate carbs. My 4-H family has offered me so much support. Because of my diagnosis, I have the ability and knowledge to teach others the importance of knowing nutritional facts and healthy lifestyle choices."
With all her extra-curricular activities, Kornele said 4-H also has taught her great time management skills, which will come in handy with her new responsibilities as a Healthy Living Youth Ambassador.
"I'm very excited to be a representative of Oklahoma at the National Healthy Living Summit," she said. "It's so important that Oklahoma 4-H takes part because we are impacting youth every day. If we can impact our youth, we can impact our future."
She is the daughter of Yolanda Kornele.
