Mapes announced as semi-finalist for nationwide Coca-Cola scholarship

With college slowly approaching, scholarships are a necessity. The Coca-Cola Scholarship is one of the many that are available. This scholarship is $20,000 awarded to 20 students around the nation.

After the first round and about 86,000 applicants, it is narrowed down to the 2,000 semi-finalists. Cathy Mapes, a senior at Alva High School, is one of these semi-finalists.

Mapes discovered this scholarship through school, as well as through her sister who had previously applied when she was in high school. She was compelled to apply for this scholarship because it really stuck out to her, especially with college approaching next year. It also stuck out to her because a friend of her sister actually received the scholarship years ago.

"The first part of the application process was not too bad. When I got to the semi-finalist round, I had to fill out a whole new scholarship with several essays and other parts that were very time consuming," Mapes said.

Although she has not advanced to the next round, it is still an amazing accomplishment to come this far in such a prestigious award. Mapes said the hardest part about this process was finding time to complete the application, but in the end it was a great decision.

"It's very time consuming but it's definitely something everyone should try – especially if you've done a lot of community service, since that's the main part of the application."
