March 24, 2017

The Alva High School Goldbugs started their week hosting the Newkirk Tigers picking up a big win before continuing that momentum into their Tuesday game on the road against Oklahoma Baptist Academy.

Game One

The Goldbugs baseball team defeated Newkirk in a huge blowout win, giving up only one run, thanks to a strong start. Alva took the early lead in the bottom half of the first inning off a double line drive to center field.

With two outs and two on base in the first inning, Chase Jones drove in those two runs off a double to center field.

Though the Tigers were able to hold Alva’s score to just two runs in that first inning, the Goldbugs had back-to-back rallies over the next two innings. Alva scored five runs in the second and their final six in the third to lead Newkirk by 13 runs. The Tigers finally got their first run in the final fifth inning as a hit-by-pitch advanced a runner across home.

Though that was Braeden Cook’s only allowed run of the game, Alva was able to put away the next two batters to end the game 13-1.

Leading at the bat was Max Parsons who hit 1-for-1 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs. Other contributors at-bat were Jones (1-for-2, 4 RBIs, 1 run), Dalton Rose (1-for-3, 1 RBI), Zeth Warren (1-for-3, 2 runs).

Cook pitched all five innings for the win over Newkirk, allowing three hits, one run, while walking one and striking out four batters.

Game Two

The Alva Goldbugs had another big win on the road as they traveled to face off with Oklahoma Bible Academy (OBA) Tuesday.

Though the first inning went by scoreless for both teams, Ethan Swanson set a tough pace for OBA as he plated three runs off a homer over the left field fence. That home run in the top of the second pushed the Goldbugs to a 6-0 lead.

OBA scored one run to respond to Alva’s six-run inning, but the Goldbugs plated two in the third and rallied big in the fourth for a nine-run inning. With 17 runs under their belts, Alva was able to cruise to another easy win as they closed out the game with a 17-2 win.

The Goldbugs picked up a whopping 12 hits against OBA with Jacob Faulkner hitting a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Swanson had a big performance hitting 2-for-3 at-bat with a home run, four RBIs and three runs.

Other contributors at-bat were Carson Gaisford (1-for-1, RBI), Stanton Earnes (1-for-2, 2 runs), Dalton Rose (1-for-2, 2 RBIs, 3 runs), T.W. Beiswanger (1-for-2, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Zeth Warren (2-for-5, 1 RBI, 2 runs), and Brooks Hadwiger (1-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run).

On the mound, Rose pitched all five innings for the win allowing two hits, two runs while walking one and striking out two.

The Goldbugs will host the Alva Festival tonight that will start at 4 p.m. The Blackwell Maroons and the Woodward Boomers will be joining.
