Goldbugs close out a win against Chisholm

March 31, 2017

The Alva High School Goldbugs baseball team hosted the Chisholm Longhorns Monday evening, getting an early lead that was enough for the win.

Thanks to a strong start from the Goldbugs, Alva’s defense went three-up and three-down to cut Chisholm’s time at the plate short. Alva had more success at-bat as T.W. Beiswanger was the first on base off a single ground ball to left field.

With two runners on base after a hit-by-pitch to Jacob Faulkner, Ethan Swanson hit the first run in off a single line drive to right field to score Beiswanger. Faulkner was later brought in by another line drive single from Chase Jones to lead Chisholm 2-0.

The Longhorns finally answered with their own run in the top of the second, but after Alva plated two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, the Goldbugs had a three-run lead, 4-1.

Chisholm was able to rally two runs in the top of the third to trail by only one, 4-3, but Alva was able to hold the Longhorns off for the win.

Faulkner, Swanson, Jones and Brooks Hadwiger led the Goldbugs each hitting 1-for-2. Swanson also picked up 1 RBI and 1 run while Jones had an RBI. Other contributors were, Stanton Earnest (1-for-3) and Beiswanger (1-for-3, 1 run).

On the mound, Rafferty Brown picked up the win on the mound pitching 4.0 innings allowing four hits, and three runs while walking one and striking out two. Hadwiger picked up the save allowing only one hit in the last 3.0 innings while striking out three at the plate.

The Goldbugs will be competing in the Hennessey Tournament this weekend starting with Jones JV Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. If the Goldbugs win they play today at 3 p.m. If they lose they play at 11 a.m.
