Ohio school district makes safety changes after student shot

WEST LIBERTY, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio school district is installing a fully opening escape window in each classroom, switching door locks and considering hiring a safety officer in the wake of a shooting that injured a student there.

West Liberty-Salem Local Schools Superintendent Craig Hissong tells the Springfield News-Sun (http://bit.ly/2nO19fq ) he thinks the safety measures in place before the January shooting worked, but the district is constantly trying to improve.

Authorities have said a 17-year-old boy fired a 12-gauge shotgun at an apparently random student, 17-year-old Logan Cole, who has since returned to class part-time.

The suspect has remained in juvenile detention and is scheduled for a competency hearing in court Friday.

Administrators in the district also plan to meet with teachers this week to get their input about potential additional safety measures.
