Goldbugs lose to a fourth inning rally from Crescent
April 2, 2017
HENNESSEY, Okla. — Despite the Goldbugs getting up to a six run lead early against Crescent, a fourth inning rally from Crescent pushed them to a one-run lead and the win.
The Alva High School Goldbugs baseball team got the early lead in the bottom of the first after Ethan Swanson hit a double line drive to center field to score T.W. Beiswanger. Though Alva was held to a one-run lead after the first, they rallied big in the second. The Goldbugs plated five runners to get a commanding lead over Crescent at the end of the second starting with a wild pitch that allowed Max Parsons to take home plate.
With a 6-0 lead over Crescent, it looked like Alva would be able to cruise to another win at the Hennessey Baseball Tournament, but momentum quickly shifted in the fourth.
Alva began to struggled on the mound allowing their first run of the day after a ball four, and the second run of a hit-by-pitch. Crescent tied the game up at 6-all as second baseman, T.W. Beiswanger went for the easy out at second, allowing a runner across home. Crescent got their final run of the fourth off a steal to home to get a one-run lead over Alva, 6-7.
As Crescent plated two runs in the fifth and their final four in the seventh inning, Alva tried to get the bats going, but weren’t able to rally to tie the game. The Goldbugs took the 8-13 loss against Crescent.
Swanson led the Goldbugs hitting 2-for-4 at the plate to go with his two RBIs and two runs. Other contributors at the plate were Beiswanger (1-for-2, 2 runs), Zeth Warren (1-for-3, 2 runs), Stanton Earnest (1-for-4), and Parsons (1-for-4, 1 run).
Brooks Hadwiger picked up the loss on the mound pitching 3.2 innings allowing eight hits, eight runs while walking three and two strike outs. Stanton Earnest pitched 3.0 innings allowing one hits and two runs while walking five and striking out two at the plate.
Next up, the Goldbugs will be hosting Hennessey on Monday, April 3, at 5 p.m. Alva will then host No. 12 of Class B Drummond the following day, April 4, at 5 p.m.
