Reddies Drop Pair to Arkansas-Monticello

 


Henderson State dropped a Great American Conference double-header to Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday, as the Weevils beat the Reddies 13-3 and 4-2 at Clyde Berry Field.

The Reddies, 19-12 overall and 13-8 in the GAC, lost its first series at home this season.

With the series tied at one game apiece, it took extra-innings before the UAM broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the 10th-inning to claim the series.

The Weevils, 19-12 and 15-6, scored two runs with two-outs in the second-inning off Reddie starting pitcher Bryant Haralson ending a streak of 31 2/3 of scoreless innings by the Reddie right-hander.

Haralson managed to hold the Weevils in check the remainder of his stint as Atkins, Ark. native pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing two runs while striking out nine in a no decision.

Meanwhile, the Reddies cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third-inning as Turner Sparks led off the frame with a single followed by a bunt single by Alan Hall. Hayden Lessenberry lined a single to centerfield to load the bases with no outs.

Sparks scored when Joe Myers grounded into a double-play. The Reddies would leave Hall stranded at third as Parker Jones grounded out to end the inning.

Henderson tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth when Lessenberry hit a double to left field and scored on a single by Myers.

The Reddies threatened in the eighth as Colton Coffman hit a one-out double to center field. However, UAM relief pitcher Dawson Moser got out of the jam as he retired the next two batters on strikes.

In the UAM 9th, Guy Halbert hit a one-out double to centerfield that ended Haralson's day. Blake Patterson entered the game and surrendered a walk to Andres Rios before getting Gentry Ford to line out into a double play to end the inning.

The Reddies, however, could not feed off the momentum as they went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.

Patterson retired the first two batters he faced in the 10th before Nick Piraino walked and Brian Ray singled to put runners on the corners. Brady Weiss then took Patterson's first offering to right field for a two run triple.

Moser pitched five innings in relief for UAM, struck out seven batters and gave up one hit in picking up the win to improve to 3-0. Patterson would be tabbed with the loss in working 1 2/3 innings falling to 0-2.

The Reddies had 10 hits in the game with Coffman leading the way going 3-for-4 while Lessenberry was 2-for-5.

In game one on Saturday, UAM belted out 12 hits and took advantage of nine walks as the Boll Weevils won 13-3.

Henderson collected six hits in the game with Jones going 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Hall had the lone extra-base hit for the Reddies as the senior collected his fifth double of the season.

Chris Hunt suffered the loss falling to 5-3 on the year. Despite the loss, Hunt struck out three batters running his career total to 198 to move into second place all-time at

Henderson by surpassing TJ Hendricks who had 196 punch-outs from 1999 to 2003.

Henderson State will next travel to Conway, Ark. to face Central Baptist on Wednesday with the first pitch set for Noon.
