A group of 4-H members and their parents gathered on the west side of the Woods County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon after school to plan a tree in recognition of Arbor Day.

Alva Mayor Kelly Parker provided some history about National Arbor Day. It was in 1872 that a member of the Nebraska Board of Agriculture, J. Sterling Morton, set aside a special day for the planting of trees.

That first holiday was observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska alone.

From a proclamation, Mayor Parker said that trees can reduce the erosion of precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air and produce life-giving oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees also give us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other products.
