April 7, 2017
The Alva High School Goldbugs baseball team jumped to an early lead over the Hennessey Eagles and took home a 5-3 victory on Monday.
With Hennessey the first to bat, Ethan Swanson struckout two batters, while Stanton Earnest turned a quick groundout to end the top of the first quickly.
In the bottom half of the inning, Alva picked up their lead here. With two outs and two on base, the Goldbugs’ Chase Jones hit a double linedrive to centerfield to score Swanson and Brooks Hadwiger across home for the 2-0 lead.
After going three scoreless innings before Alva’s offense had another big hit, this time from Swanson off a double linedrive to centerfield to score Jacob Faulkner.
The Eagles finally found some success in the top of the sixth as they plated their first two runs of the game to cut Alva’s lead to one, 3-2.
The Goldbugs were able to plate two more runs in the bottom-half of that inning to give them a three-run cushion before Hennessey scored one more run in the final seventh inning. That one run wasn’t enough to overcome the Goldbugs as Alva picked up a 5-3 win.
Swanson led the Goldbugs at the plate hitting 3-for-3 to go with his single RBI and run. Other contributors were Dalton Rose (1-for-2, 1 RBI), Earnest (1-for-3, 1 run), Faulkner (1-for-3, 1 run), Hadwiger (1-for-3, 1 run) and Jones (1-for-3, 2 RBIs).
Swanson pitched 6.0 innings for the win allowing three hits, two runs, while walking two and striking 14 batters at the plate. T.W. Beiswanger pitched 1.0 innings allowing two hits and one run while striking out two.
The Goldbugs will be competing at the Bill Tipton Classic at Carl Albert High School this weekend starting Thursday. Alva will be playing Carl Albert at 11 a.m. today followed by Weatherford at 1:15 p.m.
