Bowen and Garza named Blue Sky Media Ranger Athletes of the Month for March
April 7, 2017
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Department of Athletics has announced Madison Garza (softball) and Mason Bowen (men's rodeo) as the Blue Sky Media Athletes of the Month for March.
Mason Bowen, a senior from Bullard, Texas, has had an outstanding start to his 2017 Spring Rodeo season, earning himself a No. 1 ranking in the Central Plains Region in the tie-down roping event, sitting over 150 points ahead of No. 2 Dillon Sherrick out of Oklahoma State. In two rodeos in the month of March, Bowen had a first-place finish in Garden City and nearly missed out on another top finish at Fort Scott, settling for an impressive second place. With four Top 3 finishes thus far, Bowen will certainly be a cowboy to look out for in the final three events of the year leading up to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, come June.
Madison Garza, a right-handed pitcher for the softball team, has been at the forefront of the Rangers turnaround that has really taken off since the beginning of March. The 5-foot-4 junior out of Edna, Texas, battled for a 5-3 record this month, posting a 2.59 ERA with three complete games while allowing just 14 earned runs in 48 innings pitched. Garza showed stretches of dominance in her eight starts, capped off by a no-hitter against a highly touted opponent in Arkansas-Monticello on March 17, in which she allowed just one walk while striking out six. Garza also nabbed a victory from No. 3 Southern Arkansas, holding the potent Mulerider offense without a run in six innings of work.
