Oklahoma death row inmate gets married after license fight
April 16, 2017
McALESTER, Okla. (AP) — A 30-year-old Oklahoma death row inmate has become a newlywed after marrying a 41-year-old woman at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
The Oklahoman reports (http://bit.ly/2ohP8xx ) Gilbert Ray Postelle, who was convicted of murdering four people in Del City in 2005, wed Veronica Gale Ward at the prison in McAlester on March 16.
The wedding had been postponed in November after plans to transport Postelle to the Pittsburg County Courthouse under heavy guard to get a marriage license were canceled by Gov. Mary Fallin. Fallin intervened after her office was contacted by the sister of one of the murder victims, who complained it wasn't right for Postelle to be allowed off death row.
The license was eventually obtained through a video conference in which Postelle communicated from prison with the court clerk.
