Reddies Rally On Senior Day to Sweep SWOSU

April 16, 2017

On Senior Day at Henderson State, it was a Reddie senior that provided the game-winning hit as Parker Jones delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Henderson to a 4-3 win over Southwestern Oklahoma, Saturday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.

The win gave the Reddies a three-game sweep over the Bulldogs with Henderson improving to 23-16 overall and 16-11 in Great American Conference play, clinching a spot in the GAC Tournament.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Dylan McCain led off the inning with a double to left field off SWOSU closer Quintin Dougherty.

Luke McGuire entered the game to run for McCain and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Myers. McGuire scored and tied the game when Nolan Ryan hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

With two outs, Jackson Martin entered the game to pinch hit for Brentten Schwaab. On Friday, the freshman from Smackover, Ark. delivered a leadoff triple to lead the Reddies to a comeback victory. Saturday, he singled to keep the inning alive.

Alan Hall then laced a single to right field to move Martin to third and set the stage for Jones. The senior from The Colony, Texas took Dougherty's 2-2 offering to left-centerfield for the game winner.

Henderson didn't waste time getting on the board to begin the game as Jordan Taylor gave the Reddies a 1-0 lead with a single to right field that scored Hall who led off the game with a walk. Jones who singled prior to Taylor's base hit also singled and advanced to third on the play.

With one out, Myers drove in the second run for the home team with a single up the middle to give the Reddies the 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

SWOSU, 15-22 overall and 11-14 in the GAC, scored a run in the second and two more in the sixth to take the 3-2 lead.

The Bulldogs put pressure on Henderson pitchers the entire game with 14 hits, but the Reddie hurlers got out of several jams and SWOSU stranded 14 runners in the game.

Chris Hunt started for the Reddies on the mound and pitched 7 innings, striking out six batters while allowing three runs.

Jay Hawley pitched the eighth-inning for the Reddies, with Austin Cross pitching the ninth to record the win and improve to 2-1.

Henderson finished the game with 10 hits with Jones and Colton Coffman leading the way with three hits each.

The Reddies will next travel to Jackson, Tenn. on Tuesday to take on Union University.
