April 30, 2017

An Alva woman is facing a larceny charge after a trip to a local store. Jennifer O. Hawkins, 40, of Alva is charged with larceny of merchandise from a retailer, a misdemeanor. This crime is punishable by imprisonment in the county jail for a term not exceeding 30 days and by a fine of not less than $10 nor more than $500.

Information filed in the case shows Alva Police Officer Brian File responded to a call from a manager at Walmart. The manager said Hawkins was skipping items on a scanner at a self-checkout, paid for only two of the 15 items in her bag and then walked out the door. At that point another manager intercepted her. That manager requested Hawkins’ receipt which listed two items but there were 15 items in the bag. The manager asked Hawkins to accompany her to the back of the building. Hawkins kept claiming her sister had a receipt, but in the office she said she was sorry and wanted to pay for all the items. The police were called to press charges.

On recorded surveillance, Officer File observed Hawkins at a self-checkout moving many items near the scanner to make it look like she had scanned them. The items were then placed in a Walmart bag by her feet. Once she had the items in her bag, she walked out the door into the foyer where the manager could be seen stopping her.

Total value of the items stolen was $75.93. These included a package of three Chapsticks, a box of Nyquil, “The Call” DVD, Tylenol 8-hour Cold Cough, two boxes of Advil, two Respiratory Alkaseltzer and four packages of Sweetarts Ropes. Hawkins was taken to the Woods County Jail.
