Rodeo Wraps up 2016-17 Season at OPSU, Qualifies Five for CNFR

April 30, 2017

GUYMON, Okla. – The final rodeo on the Central Plains Region schedule had a mix of wonderful and winter weather as SWOSU competed at the Doc Gardner Memorial Rodeo in Guymon over the weekend. The Bulldogs got a third-place finish from the women's team while the men placed ninth at the rodeo to qualify five individuals for the 2017 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in June.

SWOSU got a second-place finish from Mikayla Harrison in Goat Tying as she had matching times of 9.6 seconds on her runs. That placed her sixth in the long round and shared second and third in the short round. Also placing second in the average was Rachel Pozzi in Barrel Racing, after timing runs of 17.64 and 18.65 seconds to place third and second, respectively in the rounds. Kylee Cahoy won the short round of Barrel Racing in 18.39 seconds to finish fourth in the average, a mark equaled by Ricki Konze in Breakaway.

Kenzie Huffman (Breakaway and Barrel Racing) and Rachel Pozzi (Barrel Racing) will represent for SWOSU at the CNFR this summer.

Tough luck hit the Bulldogs on the men's side as Nick Shenold and Alex Phelps were the only individuals who placed in the average. Shenold scored 68 points in the long round of Saddle Bronc, placing fourth in the round but then slipping to fifth in the average after no score in the short round. Phelps was 10.2 seconds in the short round of Steer Wrestling and fourth in the average, but SWOSU came up just short of qualifying the Men's team for the CNFR.

Representing the Bulldogs at the CNFR in Casper, Wyo., this summer on June 11-17 will be Nathan Hatchel (Bull Riding), Alex Phelps (Team Roping) and Nick Shenold (Saddle Bronc).
