Seniors lead Tigers over Reddies

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Ouachita Tigers' baseball team defeated rival Henderson State by final of 8-1 in the rubber game of the series. The Tigers won the series 2-1 and improved to 16-33 overall and 13-20 in GAC play. Senior Justin Weigle went 4-5 with a triple and two RBI. Senior Weston Talley went 1-3 from the plate and scored two runs. Senior Jayme Lovelace won his third game of the year after going 7.2 innings. He allowed one run and struck out five.

Senior Zach Gloff, who missed the season due to injury, opened the game with the first pitch. Lovelace entered the game immediately after. Ouachita took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kyle Alexander led the inning off with a base hit to right and later stole second. J.D. Speed drove in Alexander with a two-out single. The Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Talley led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on hit from Ty Owens. After a sacrifice bunt from senior Ryan Hammer, Talley scored on wild pitch. Owens scored on a triple by Weigle, who scored on a single from Alexander. Aaron Studdard drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two-out hit to left.

Up 6-0, Ouachita faced a scoring threat from Henderson State in the top of the fourth. With two outs and runners on the corners, Jakahari Howell made a full-extension diving catch in right center to keep the Reddies off the scoreboard. In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers increased their lead by two. Ryan Hammer drove in a run with a base hit and later scored on single by Justin Weigle. The Reddies put one run on the board in the top of the eighth, but Garrett Hamilton and Brain Krikorian combined for 1.1 scoreless inning in relief to preserve the win.

The Tigers will face Southern Arkansas University in the opening round of the 2017 GAC Baseball Championships. Game dates and times will be posted at obutigers.com.
