New Little Olympics time – other items
May 3, 2017
The Alva Kiwanis club had to postpone their annual Little Olympics last Saturday because of the 2–2.5 inches of rain we had in Woods County. The rain date for the event had already been selected, which is this coming Saturday, May 8. The problem with that is the NWOSU graduation is at 10:30 that morning, and many university employees are members of Kiwanis and provide help at the Little Olympics. They are also required to be at the graduation.
Tim Maharry, a university employee and long-time coordinator of the Little Olympics, had phone calls from about nine people saying they couldn't be there because of the graduation conflict. So at the board meeting Monday, the Kiwanis club decided to start the Little Olympics at 1 p.m. instead of 9 a.m. That way, graduation would be over and perhaps a full crew would be available to help pull-off the event.
If you would like to volunteer to help, Tim's phone number is 580-430-1729. He would prefer a text message. You would need to be at the Alva High School track by 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. The Olympics usually take about four hours, but provides great exercise for several hundred kids.

It's great that both Jane McDermott and Jeff Hickman have been appointed to the two different regent boards that govern the state-funded colleges and universities in Oklahoma. Jane is on the State Regent board and Jeff is on the Higher Regent board.

Kiwanis Community Auction – Donate and Participate
I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago. The Kiwanis Club is trying to raise funds to construct a NICE covering over the stage on the west side of the courthouse. May 21 at the Woods County Fairgrounds in the afternoon is the date.
This reminder is for two reasons: why not clean your garage of no longer used but workable items and bring them to the auction. Contact Kiwanian Marc Wallace at his cell phone 580-430-2188 if you can donate. He needs to list your items in a sale bill. Please don't donate clothes as there are several groups in our community who handle that.
Think big! Lawnmowers, bicycles, tricycles, exercise equipment, boats, office equipment, furniture, motorcycles, cars, farm accessories, weed eaters, freezers or refrigerators that work. This auction is your chance to have a clean garage and at the same time help with this great community project.

I dropped by Share Medical Center yesterday and learned that hospital administrator Kandice Allen had put on her registered nurse hat to sub as the office nurse for Dr. Michael Lawrence. We ought to pat her on the back for this, along with many other community leaders who do more than sit behind a desk. Kandice's job might be more pleasant than Longfellow Principal Steve Shiever's payoff to a bunch of kids who met their reading goals. He gets to take 51 pies in the face next Friday afternoon.
