Dirty bombs

 


Fearful as we are of a nuclear strike by the North Koreans, a more imminent threat lies in the unknown quantities of weapons-grade uranium-235 that can be used to make a “dirty” bomb.

Packed with conventional explosives, a small amount of this material could contaminate a neighborhood, doing the expected damage from the explosion, but also exposing the survivors and first responders to life-threatening radiation. The cost to decontaminate a highly populated area is staggering and the dust generated would account for more casualties.
