Reddies drop opening game of GAC Tournament to SAU, 7-2

Henderson State out-hit Southern Arkansas, but the Lady Muleriders used a big third inning to to break open a close game and defeat the Reddies 7-2 in the opening game of the Great American Conference Tournament for both teams.
The Reddies jumped on SAU early when back-to-back singles from Courtney Warren and Selena Mendoza gave HSU two baserunners and Keirsten Seahorn doubled to score Warren, giving Henderson the 1-0 lead.
SAU responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, taking the lead by plating two runs, which were aided by two Reddies errors and a wild pitch, to retake a 2-1 lead.
In the third, Henderson's Alexis Morton singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third to give the Reddies a runner on third with no outs, but HSU could not score her to tie the game. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Muleriders took advantage and broke the game open with a double from Monica Islava that scored two, and another double seconds later from Tyler Casada which scored Islava, scoring three runs and giving SAU a 5-1 advantage.
Henderson got a run back in the sixth on an RBI single from Michelle Sorensen which scored Bethany Allen, but Ashleigh Erb was thrown out at the plate on the play trying to score from second, which ended the inning for HSU. In the bottom half, the Lady Muleriders tacked on two more runs on an RBI triple and another wild pitch to secure their lead, 7-2. Down to their final three outs, the Reddies could not get anything going in the seventh, as SAU closed it out to claim the first round win.
The Reddies out-hit the top offensive team in the GAC 9-6, but two errors came back to hurt Henderson. Erb had a strong showing for HSU at the plate, going 3-for-3. Sorensen got the loss in the circle and gave up seven runs on six hits, while striking out six.
The loss moves HSU into the loser's bracket, where they will take on Southern Nazarene at 3:30 p.m. today at Memorial Park in Bentonville, Arkansas in an elimination game.
