Jalee Hembree, Longfellow Elementary student, delights in sending a pie to Principal Steve Shiever's face as her reward for earning $150-plus during Longfellow's Spell-a-Thon Awards on May 5.

Longfellow Elementary School students had something to look forward to last week that most students don't get the pleasure of doing: "pieing" their principal in the face.

Students were awarded the opportunity to throw a pie in Principal Steve Shiever's face if they earned $150 or more during the school's Spell-a-Thon event.

Shiever received 51 pies in the face during the event.

Prize sponsorships were donated by Gambino's Pizza, Wal-Mart, Taco Mayo, Alva Speedway, Sonic, Pizza Hut, Bradt's Menagerie, Lyn's T-shirt, Cookie's Bowl and Hopeton State Bank.

Each class and each student competed to earn the most during the Spell-a-Thon. Mrs. Hagelberg's class earned the most with $2,140.30. The students earned, in total, $13,976.

Gunnar Tackett won 1st place, earned $505.50 and received a Playstation 4 as his prize. Endy Barraza won 2nd place, earned $458.50, and received several Xbox 360 games.

Austin Adair and Adyson Pfleider were the T-shirt winners, and their Spell-a-Thon drawings were featured on the front and back on the Spell-a-Thon event shirts.

The students cheered and clapped as they were able to "pie" Shiever in the face or watch him get "pied" during the Spell-a-Thon event.
