The Longfellow Elementary School student body screamed and yelled with excitement as the pay-off day arrived to plaster their principal, Steve Shiever, with 51 pies to the face. Students earned money by getting pledges from relatives and friends for payment for each book they read. Fifty-one students each raised $150 or more to get the privilege of plastering their principal with Cool-Whip-type pies.

A few of the younger students timidly approached Shiever and smacked him in the face, while older students slammed the pie and smeared it all around his hair and face.
