Top 3 Reasons I like Christian and gospel music

Last night, I caught a few seconds of another TV award show (on my way to watching something else). They were honoring Cher, one of the great “one name wonders” of the music industry. At 71 years young, she was still belting it out onstage. Other single namers that come to mind are Prince, Madonna, Liberace and Sting. Of course, for a while, Prince became “the artist formerly known as Prince” so he may not count.

The Dove Awards (honoring outstanding Christian music) is scheduled for October of this year in Nashville, Tennessee. I doubt that I will watch more than a few fleeting seconds of that show, either. Award shows are just too tedious for my taste. How many times can you get excited about poorly read teleprompter speeches followed by the phrase, “And the winner is … ?” However, I do see great worth in Christian and Gospel music. Here are my top three reasons to listen to Christian music:

1. There’s no need to explain away the lyrics. I remember trying to enlighten my parents about the fact that “I only listen to rock and roll because I like the beat.” The fact that they are talking about drugs and sex never crossed my mind.

2. If you want to rebel against society, mainstream rock and country just don’t fill the bill. Good morals and faith in the Son of God is about as counter-cultural as you can get in the music industry these days.

3. A song that makes you tap your toes and raise your praise at the same time is good way to spend the day.

See you Sunday!
