State Representative Carl Newton to speak at Historic Short Springs Schoolhouse

Each year on Memorial Day at 11 a.m. the little one room schoolhouse on U.S. Highway 64 in Alfalfa County comes back to life. That is when the Short Springs Cemetery Association holds its annual meeting.

This year local musician Angie May will bring her unique "Wind Controller" instrument to entertain the group. May has performed her hauntingly beautiful music at weddings, festivals and other events.

State Rep. Carl Newton will be the featured speaker.

Founded in 1901, the cemetery predates statehood. For over 50 years the cemetery association has held its business meetings and its annual membership meeting in the historic Short Springs Schoolhouse. This unique arrangement has allowed the organization to maintain and preserve the historic schoolhouse while also caring for the beautiful country cemetery located one half mile west of the school.

A potluck lunch will follow the meeting.

Anyone with a tie to the cemetery, the Short Springs School or is looking for an old time patriotic Memorial Day program is welcome.
