Black smoke towers over a fire that consumed a tractor and baler just south of Alva Monday, May 29. The equipment, owned by Jack and Jeremy Wiebener, was a total loss.

Plumes of dark smoke drifted over Alva Memorial Day afternoon. The Alva Fire Department was called to U.S. Highway 281 South and Greer Road at 2:23 p.m. for a tractor on fire. They arrived at 2:36 p.m. at the Jack and Jeremy Wiebener property to find a tractor and attached baler in flames.

There was no saving the equipment so firefighters concentrated on putting out the fire and keeping it from spreading to the field.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Miller, the fire started in the electrical system of the tractor. Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:32 p.m.
