Assembly begins debate of UW free speech bill

 


MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin state Assembly is debating a bill that calls for expelling University of Wisconsin students who repeatedly disrupt the free speech rights of others.

Republican supporters of the measure slated to pass Wednesday say the idea is all about protecting free speech. But Democratic opponents say it will have the opposite effect and chill free speech.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says the measure won't stop the problem of speakers being disrupted by protesters, but it's a start.
