Sick in Louisiana – Part 1

For a while back in the day, I listened to country music. One of my favorite groups was The Kendalls, who were unique because they were a father-daughter duo.

Many of the songs they recorded were about extra-marital affairs. Their biggest hit was “Heaven's Just a Sin Away.” Another was “It Don't Feel Like Sinning to Me (Feels Like Love).”

My favorite Kendalls song was “The Pittsburgh Stealers.” The two married people in it were running around on their spouses “stealing happiness and cheating any time we can” while working in the steel mills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The song also has all kinds of references to football and so our cheating couple are the Stealers (“ea”) rather than the Steelers (“ee”) as in the football team.

Anyway, it's a cute song and I like it. The first line is “I found myself in Pittsburgh.” That line came to me as I was in a cab heading to a hospital emergency room on June 20.

Instead of finding myself in Pittsburgh, however, I found myself in Alexandria, Louisiana – of all places. And I was so sick I couldn't hold my head up or walk without help. I was also tingling all over.

It was a Tuesday morning but the story goes back to the previous Saturday. I had a good day that day. I did some shopping, ate some good food, and caught up on some reading I was supposed to be doing.

Then, I found a laundromat to wash my clothes. The washer and dryer I randomly chose each worked perfectly and so I got my clothes cleaned without any problems.

Finally, I bought a couple of things at a grocery store and headed back to my motel. When I went to bed Saturday night, life was good.

But when I woke up Sunday morning, the first thing I noticed was that I had a cramp-like pain in my stomach.

Things went steadily downhill from there. I'll tell you some more of the story next week. It's bad – at least from my perspective!
