Oklahoma City school district looks into employee misconduct

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City's public school district recently investigated allegations of misconduct involving nearly two-dozen employees, including claims that workers had abused students or engaged in sexual harassment, among other accusations.

Thirteen of the 21 employees investigated were suspended and five resigned, The Oklahoman reported (http://bit.ly/2sIE0PH ).

District officials said the district conducted the investigations from May to June and notified authorities in 12 instances.

"The district has an obligation to ensure the safety of all employees and students," said Beth Harrison, communications director. "There were situations that the district felt it was appropriate to notify law enforcement."

Douglass Mid-High School and Greystone Elementary School were among the schools the district investigated.

Douglass Mid-High Principal Andrew Pearson resigned June 5 after being suspended without pay in May for allegations that he violated "board policy and/or regulations." Pearson's resignation will take effect July 15.

Two teachers and a teacher's aide from Greystone Elementary school resigned after misconduct allegations.

Parent Candace Liger alleged that a teacher pushed her son to the ground. She also accused another employee of sharing inappropriate details of a relationship in front of her son's class.

"They acted pretty promptly after speaking with me," Liger said. "I pretty much demanded accountability."

Superintendent Aurora Lora divulged the Greystone resignations to board members, principals and other district leaders on May 30.

"As is typical with the end of the school year, the HR team was particularly busy this past week with multiple internal investigations regarding staff members exhibiting questionable conduct," Lora stated.

The district has also investigated allegations of employee misconduct at Centennial Mid-High; Stand Watie Elementary; Southeast High; Arthur Elementary; North Highland Elementary; Parmelee Elementary; Lee Elementary; and Spencer Elementary.
