Oklahoma officer fatally shoots man

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City police say an officer has fatally shot a man who allegedly fired a gun at passing vehicles.

Police Capt. Paco Balderrama tells The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/2tdFoej ) that police responded to a call around 4:30 a.m. Sunday about a man pointing a handgun at passing vehicles.

Balderrama says officers found 24-year-old Deveonte L. Johnson sitting on the steps of a business and holding a gun. He says officer Clayton Sargeant discharged his weapon after Johnson walked toward officers and made threatening gestures.

Johnson was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police records show Sargeant has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting death is investigated.

Balderrama says video footage from an officer's body camera should be available soon.

Johnson was black. The race of the officer wasn't immediately known.
