Strong winds of Friday storm cause widespread damage

A tree planted by the Tulip Garden Club in memory of Bill Richey is heavily damaged following the early Friday morning storm. The tree is just north of the Alva Post Office.

After several days of temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, Alva residents welcomed a forecast including rain. It had been about a month since any significant precipitation amounts fell in the area.

Radar images Thursday night showed rainfall to the north, and it seemed it might skip Woods County entirely. However, the storms dropped below the Kansas border and brought more than the welcome rain.
