Bowen adds Hankins and Reyes to coaching staff

With the hiring of Tyle Hankins and Luis Reyes, Northwestern Oklahoma State Head Baseball Coach Ryan Bowen has completed his coaching staff for the upcoming season.

“I am fired up about our staff,” Bowen said. “Aaron Gilbreath is one of the best young pitching coaches in our region and now the addition of Tyle and Luis makes our staff complete. I think it's a dynamic young staff that will mesh well and will develop our players in all facets of baseball and life on a daily basis.”

Tyle Hankins joins the Ranger coaching staff as the team's new hitting coach, after a season at Southwestern Oklahoma State where he worked with hitters and infielders. He was also responsible for assisting with recruiting for the Bulldogs.

“Tyle will also be responsible for working with our hitters on a daily basis, as well as, working with me to develop an offensive game plan,” Bowen said. “Our hitters will be excited to go to work with Tyle. His energy, organization skills, and the ability to communicate and connect with our hitters will take our offense to new heights.”

After his playing career was over, Hankins spent two years at Byng High School in Ada as an assistant coach from 2013 to 2014. In that time span, the Byng Pirates saw three trips to the state tournament between both the fall and spring seasons. In 2015, Hankins rejoined East Central as a graduate assistant. He spent two years coaching the Tigers, before joining the SWOSU coaching staff.

Hankins has also spent the last three summers as an assistant coach for collegiate leagues. In 2015, he spent the summer in Saskatchewan, Canada, in the Western Major Baseball League coaching the Melville Millionaires. From 2016 to now, he has coached the Derby Twins in the Jayhawk Summer Collegiate League.

Hankins played one year at Clarendon College in the Junior College ranks. His final three years of eligibility were spent at fellow Great American Conference school, East Central University. As a Tiger, Hankins was a member of the GAC All-Academic Team.

A native of Olustee, Oklahoma, Hankins received both his bachelor's degree in history as well his master's in sports administration from East Central.

“Tyle has already earned a great reputation as a hard worker and diligent recruiter in this region,” Bowen said. “He comes highly recommended, and his experience recruiting in our conference will be an advantage for our program moving forward."

Coach Bowen is also excited about the addition of Luis Reyes who will be primarily working with the Ranger infielders.

“Luis will be a welcome addition to our staff,” Bowen said. “Luis will serve as our infield coach, will assist Tyle with hitters, and will also help with recruiting. Luis has an incredible work ethic, which I know will be transferred to our infielders. He has also established great connections at the junior college level, and his background will help us in recruiting the international player as well.”

Prior to joining the Northwestern coaching staff, Reyes has been the assistant baseball coach at Murray State Junior College in Tishomingo, where they were very successful this past season, making it to the Junior College World Series.

At Murray State he worked with the infielders and was the assistant hitting coach as well. He was also very instrumental in recruiting as he was the assistant recruiting coordinator/international recruiter for the program.

Before joining on the Murray State coaching staff, Reyes was the head baseball coach at Marietta High School for a season. While at the helm of the program, Reyes' club was the district champion. He held many duties as the head coach such as, hitting coach, third base coach, field maintenance and strength and conditioning.

During the summer of 2015, Reyes was the head coach of the Myrtle Beach Riptides in the Beach League - Collegiate Summer League. Under Reyes' leadership, the Riptides were Beach League champions, the first championship in the organization's history. They finished up the year at 32-18, leading to Coach of the Year honors for Reyes.

He was also a standout player in his college days, where he played two years at Iowa Lakes Community College, followed up by his final two seasons at Clarke University. While at Clarke he was named a Gold Glove winner at the third base position in the MCC Conference. During that same season he was also named to the first team All-Conference team.

Reyes earned his bachelor's degree from Clarke in May of 2014 and will be looking to gain his master's here at Northwestern.
