It matches my belief that if a person has a compelling reason to get out of bed each morning, he'll keep percolating along. I've just seen too many friends fade away six months after retiring. Of course, I believe another factor is the physical difficulty of the job. Pouring hot tar roofs or building highways under the hot sun takes a physical toll that makes retirement pretty attractive. But if you're having fun at what you do, and it is not physically damaging, that's the other side of the discussion.)
