The cutoff notice scam

It was the usual busy Monday afternoon at the newspaper when someone told me a man from OG&E was on the line saying he had a cutoff notice for our address. I knew I’d paid last month’s bill, and it was too early this month to be considered late.

This must be a bookkeeping problem, I thought. Before I answered the phone, I pulled up the OG&E account. Sure enough, I paid the bill back on July 11.

The man on the phone said they were getting ready to cut off our service at 620 Choctaw due to non-payment. I explained I paid the bill on time. He said they had sent a couple of notices. I said...
