Patchwork Friends OHCE group learn about using social media

August 27, 2017

The Patchwork Friends OHCE group met for their regular meeting on Aug. 10 at the home of JoAnne Prewett. Prewett called the meeting to order and Barbara Cue led the group in the flag salute. Devotions were given by the hostess on Abraham and his struggle with patience with God. Dr. Jennifer Page was welcomed as a new member. Roll call was answered to “Are you social media savvy?” by Cue, Dottie Gatz, Liz Kinzie, Janice Litton, Dee Mason, Aleta Nolan, Jennifer Page, Prewett and Doris White.

The July minutes were approved with a slight change. The treasurer's report was given by Mason. Pennies and nickels were collected. Several members showed items they had made for the fair. Gatz showed her cards and Mason showed the quilt she made. White showed her vest and Litton showed her glass block.

There was discussion on the NWOSU Education Department asking for new or gently used business clothes, shoes and accessories for NWOSU education majors for interviews, classroom observation and student teaching. Page reminded the group the deadline is Aug. 31 to bring them to the Education Center.

The NW Ministry for New Parents includes a baby boutique project. Mason has received the training for this project. A building has been identified and there will be a box at the Woods County Fair asking for donations.

Discussion on the Woods County Fair was a reminder for each member to make the tag for their group booth item. Prewett will be superintendent with canning and baking and Mason with sewing, home improvement, and senior citizens. Each member was reminded to bring a pie for the fair kitchen and Gatz will make the extra pie. The group will work in the fair kitchen on Thursday with both shifts assisted by Northwestern Art Society members.

Members were reminded to bring their ribbons to the next meeting for a group picture for the scrapbook and that dues are due Oct. 2.

Gatz gave the lesson on “Social Media for Membership.” Patchwork Friends uses email and Facebook to keep up with upcoming events in OHCE. The speaker at the state meeting told the group that her dad didn't believe she couldn't get a job when she was on her iPhone all the time. She now has a job with Cox Communication. Social media is not just a fad, but is here to stay.

Kinzie gave a mini-lesson on cutting up T-shirts for making a crocheted rag rug. She gave each member two pieces of T-shirt and showed how she connected them to make the rug she is working on for the fair booth.

The next Leader's Training will be Aug. 24t at 10 a.m. in the Woods County Courthouse Conference Room. All members are encouraged to attend.

Prewett served dessert and White won the hostess gift.

The next meeting of the Patchwork Friends OHCE group will be at the home Mason on Sept. 14.
