We all harbor thoughts about what the future will bring, but some of us are ready to do something about it. A change of career might be on your mind, and if it is, it may be time to act.

I never planned to teach for a lifetime so when the time came, I moved on to something else. It’s fun sometimes to recall various career moves I could have made. After college, I considered an executive position in the Boy Scouts, courtesy Scott Ware. Thanks, Scott. Gil Michaelis offered me an insurance internship while G.E. Stockton with Gibson’s Discount considered me a candidate for store manager. One shouldn’t really care about what could have been, but if I had chosen popcorn vendor at the Rialto, I would have done a great job.

Cousin Debbie makes a pro and con list when making decisions. Even then, the “best laid schemes o' mice and men go aft a-glay.” In order to make the right career choice, you must consider that you’ll be “switching horses in the middle of the stream,” and, according to Kristin van Ogtrop, “just because you were successful at your current job doesn’t mean you can jump easily to another.”

Remember, too, that in another setting, you’ll need to swallow your pride and ask lots of questions. The only stupid question is the one left unasked. I didn’t think I would round out my career hauling junk, but then it must not be so bad, look at Scribner!
